Does a thank-you card count as marketing?

Pretty soon you’ll be seeing me walk right out onto the Free Marketing Made Easy web page, courtesy of my new friend Charlie at StandOut Video. Obviously I like their product, but that’s not the main reason I’m writing about it. I want to tell you about their service because of something that has nothing to do with the product itself.

A few days after sending in my deposit I received a package in the mail. In it I found a hand written thank-you card from Charlie McDermott (President of the company) and a fun book called Outrageous Advertising That’s Outrageously Successful. Sounds like a great read! Three days after that, I received another hand written note from Tracy Wing, Charlie’s Director of Business Development and the person with whom I had scheduled my session. Tracy thanked me for contacting their company, and said how much she is looking forward to my visit.

Wow. All of this just for scheduling an appointment. Do you think I am genuinely excited about working with these people now? You betcha!

The cards probably took them just a few minutes each to produce, and cost pennies. List price of the book is $20. Let’s include the cost of shipping and say that this whole personalized service cost Charlie $25. What’s he get out of it? Well, you can be sure that I’ll be telling everybody I know about his company, their product, and the exceptional personalized attention they offer.

Here’s my main point: every interaction your company has with prospects or customers counts as marketing. Customer service, sales…it’s all marketing, because it all creates an impression that makes people want to work with you…or not. So take a page out of Charlie’s book. Deliver the pleasantly unexpected and let people tell your story for you.
